He has worked at a senior level within the financial and corporate communications sector for several decades, particularly focused on issues relating to strategy and planning. He has been a board member of two major international communications consultancies where, as Research and Planning Director, he worked on many aspects of strategic communications within the financial and corporate sectors.
Steve was Communications Director of Cinven, one of Europe’s largest private equity firms, for over a decade. During this time he was involved with many of the most significant corporate acquisitions and disposals of the day. His work included developing communications strategies; dealing with issues of crisis management within a wide-ranging portfolio of high-profile companies; assisting corporate brand development across different sectors; and optimising organisational structures for communications and marketing teams.
His background in planning and analysis is reflected in his academic interests. Steve is one of the leading authorities on strategy within the Medieval world, and particularly the Crusader states. He has just completed ‘The Crusader Strategy’, an innovative analysis of the strategic thinking underpinning interactions between medieval Europe and the Middle East. Other books include ‘The Crusader Armies’ (Yale, 2018) and the strangely little read ‘Monarchy and Lordships in the Latin Kingdom of Jerusalem, 1099 – 1291’ (Oxford, 1989).
Steve is a graduate of Cambridge and London Universities. He has an honorary position on the history faculty at Royal Holloway College, London University.
